Dysgraphia Writing Example #1


Here is dysgraphia writing example #1 taken from my son's journal he wrote in at age 8 1/2 when he attended school for a semester. He wrote this entry while Hurricane Katrina was still fresh on his mind. If you overlook the spelling and technical details, it's actually a pretty detailed account of what he experienced in the aftermath of this storm (although somewhat embellished!)  (Be sure to also view dysgraphia writing example #2).


There are a lot of interesting things I could point out from this writing sample. Most of these errors are consistent with the classic signs of dysgraphia and also reflect some of the typical handwriting errors a dyslexic student makes.  Notice his spelling of words like "ploble" for "probably" and "a Ler" for "other". This illustrates one of the hallmarks of dyslexia - problems accurately distinguishing the individual sounds or phonemes in a word. He mixes capital and lower case letters, has inconsistent spacing, has little use for punctuation, forms the same letter differently in different places, and has to rely mostly on phonetic spelling since he has difficulty drawing from mental pictures of words stored in his head.  It's a little hard to tell from this copy, but he also has many erasure marks indicating his difficulty forming the letters and words he wants to use.

Remember, not everyone with dyslexia will have dysgraphia, and not all people with dysgraphia have dyslexia. I am providing this writing sample just as an example of what the handwriting of a child with dysgraphia may look like:

Translation: The worst storm I have been in is probably Hurricane Katrina.  It was a disaster.  Everything went everywhere.  It was so difficult.  The garbage went everywhere and our garbage can flew in the middle of the road.  When we woke up, we saw it and a lot of other garbage can, and there was hail banging on our windows.  It almost broke the window and it was big hail, the size of a golf ball.  The end.
